MMM…Mexican

One of the nice things about Quicken is that it tries to guess my spending habits and lets me know if a transaction is overdue or coming soon.

While catching up with some bills today, Quicken told me that I was overdue for El Chapala, the Mexican restaurant next to church. I guess we have been going there pretty regularly. :o)

Lutheran vs. Baptist

Josh (the Lutheran) has written one of the funniest posts I think I’ve ever read. I think Josh is onto something with regards to the car. In such a debate, I’d keep the car and concede defeat.

To get an idea of who James White is, you can get a taste here. Warning: he’s fiery. You can also get a good idea of how his fan base views him by comparing a picture of him with fan art.

The Eyes of Texas …

… are upon you!

Yeah, turning a team’s logo upside down really does look stupid.

Babel and Historical Linguistics

Has anyone read anything convincing on historical linguistics and the Tower of Babel? Jordan or Leithart, perhaps? Continue reading

ESV Bibles

A trade paperback edition of the ESV Bible was released in Feb 2005, and I missed the announcement. I’ve always thought that the trade paperback was a great idea. When Kristen and I finally host bible studies or home groups in our own home, we’ll have a cache of trade paperback ESVs. Good to know that they’re available and only $9.99!

Schools and Families

The story about a girl being kicked out of a Christian school in California for her mother being a lesbian has been making waves around the Christian blogosphere. Most of those I read said something along the lines of, “That isn’t the gospel!” “Way to show Christ!” Marvin Olasky even asked if the behavior was ‘Pharisaical’? Continue reading

Opening of the Calvinist Beer

Whoa. I thought beer was for Lutherans? not Calvinists!? (Just kidding. Check out the link anyhow.) HT: Davey

Closing of the Calvinistic Mind

Many have been discussing the new BH issue. The first article has the aforementioned title; the second article deals with AAPC, FV, NPP, etc…

My thought on both is whether the internet has to do with both of them. Now, I appreciate the blessing the internet has given us. My family in CA is able to see pictures of my daughter despite us being in VA. However, 50 years ago I would probably not have heard anything from a conference like AAPC. Men wouldn’t have been able to ‘sound the alarm’ on the internet; I would never have been able to spread my own thoughts or commented on the thoughts of others. It probably would have been discussed via papers and meetings, but never have become such a hubbub with church splits, heresy calls, and common laypeople becoming so vitrolic and divisive.

What do y’all think?

Wuerffel and DSM

Wow. I didn’t know that Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 national champion and Heisman Trophy winner from Florida, was a Christian.

It turns out that he retired from the NFL and took a development director position with Desire Street Ministries.

An ESPN article discusses his work with the ministry in light of Hurricane Katrina and includes a link where you can donate to Desire Street Ministries.
