World Magazine, the AAP and SIDS

We got the latest World Magazine today and I was reading it in the car on our way to midweek communion service and something just really grated my nerves. Continue reading

Schools and Families

The story about a girl being kicked out of a Christian school in California for her mother being a lesbian has been making waves around the Christian blogosphere. Most of those I read said something along the lines of, “That isn’t the gospel!” “Way to show Christ!” Marvin Olasky even asked if the behavior was ‘Pharisaical’? Continue reading

Cool Speech

The student body at Dartmouth elected Noah Riner to be their President last spring. Many of them now regret that after hearing his convocation speech on character to the freshman class last week. Did I mention Riner is an evangelical? (Hat tip to Megan.)

Wuerffel and DSM

Wow. I didn’t know that Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 national champion and Heisman Trophy winner from Florida, was a Christian.

It turns out that he retired from the NFL and took a development director position with Desire Street Ministries.

An ESPN article discusses his work with the ministry in light of Hurricane Katrina and includes a link where you can donate to Desire Street Ministries.

A head’s up

If you are looking for a place to contribute to hurricane relief, consider the deacon’s fund at John Knox PCA in Ruston. Members of the church have taken in a number of families, some extended family and others strangers. The Red Cross does have a shelter in Ruston, but those not sleeping in the shelter cannot receive aid. One extended family in particular, strangers before this week, needs immediate help. The family consists of ten adults, five teenagers, four-8-11 year olds, and two infants. The church desires to see them and others in their midst through until they can return home, which obviously will take a while. Wal-mart gift cards, gas cards, cans of formula and cash donations will really help JKPCA to help them. If you want more info, contact Brad Bourgeois by leaving him a comment here or on his blog.

Really Bothering Me

Why are people saying Katrina is the judgement of God on wicked New Orleans and the casinos on the Gulf Coast? What about the obviously NOT wicked people who have lost everything? I know Desire Street Ministries lost everything, and all the staff who live in the 9th ward lost everything, too. Lord, have mercy on us for judging others…

Vaccines, Fetal Tissues and Other Considerations

We are not anti-vaccination. Kate was fully vaccinated ’til her first birthday, and though I do think it is the parents’ right to choose whether to vaccinate or not, we want our children protected both from diseases and from spreading them to others who might not be able to fight them off, though probably on a more delayed schedule than the average pediatrician’s office pushes.

What is bothersome to me is the use of aborted fetal tissue in the development of many vaccines Kate *should* be getting now. MMR, Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Hep-A vaccines were all developed using aborted fetal tissue lines. That’s just a fact. Continue reading
