Besides, skim milk just tastes bad

A recent study shows full-fat milk and ice cream aids in fertility.  All fat is not created equal.  We’re a whole milk family, for the record.  We switched from 1% a while back.

  1. Not only that, but I recently read that the amount of fat that occurs naturally in milk is exactly the right amount to promote calcium absorption–any less and there’s no point drinking milk to get your calcium. That, along with the study you link to, made me feel really good about the fact that we switched from 2% to whole a few weeks ago–initially just because I prefer it. Ahh…vindication. :D

That stinks, because 1) we have fertility issues and 2) I HATE whole milk, and actually prefer skim or 2%.

    Sigh.

  3. I can’t handle 1%…it tastes like water! 2% is okay, but we greatly prefer whole milk.

  4. Per the study, I can understand women drinking whole milk… but men? Seems like a great way to clog one’s arteries to me. : /

  5. So then, conversely, if one would like to abstain from children, skim milk is the way to go?

  6. If barrenness is the goal, sure.

If having children is ever a goal, I think promoting fertility is good, yes?

  7. my justification in drinking skim-and this is completely made up by me-is that ideally, i don’t want to drink homogenized milk because the fat particles are broken up so small. i have very limited access to raw milk in alaska [it’s here, just not easy to get] i just assumed skim milk didn’t need to be homogenized. do you know anything about that? i have nothing to back this idea up-besides fertility being something that seems to abound in this household without whole [though, we have our share of heavy cream too…maybe that balances it out?]

  8. It’s probably a good thing that I’m not looking to have kids any time soon, because I’m not a big whole milk fan.

Full-fat ice cream, on the other hand…

  9. ok, i would like to say that skim milk is not a form of birth control. seems like the only thing the study shows is that whole milk may promote fertility. i mean, if you think about it, plenty of women get knocked up every day that don’t drink any milk at all. where do you think crack babies come from?

  10. Ok, this was all just funny.

And I love whole milk so much I should be expecting quintuplets before too long.

  11. We just went back up to whole since Isaac turned one and is on cow’s milk (most of the time) now. We’re not especially in a hurry to add to the brood, though!

The ice cream thing could explain a lot about the time TTC #1 vs. #2…

  12. The thing to remember about any high fat product is that the fat has to go somewhere, and if one is not careful with their health as a whole, lots of fat from any source (including milk) is not the best thing.

  13. “i would like to say that skim milk is not a form of birth control.”

It’s rad that this needed to be said.

  14. You are the king of sarcasm and I am an agent of confusion. It’s a deadly combination in ye ole comments.

  15. It’s almost like a plague. And if we keep drinking whole milk, it might be like a plague of babies (which, incidentally, would be a rad name for a shoegazer band).
