Last month, we celebrated the first anniversary of our move to the deep south bungalow. Perhaps “celebrated” is a poor choice of words. We ought to have celebrated but the day passed us by as any other. Now, we are observing seconds. It’s astonishing to me how much more comfortable we are here than we ever were in Richmond, and how easy it is to imagine being here, in this magic city, for a decade, for a lifetime. For the first time, I think we are finding a home. And yet, it doesn’t come easy, and it doesn’t come instantly. Friendships and community take time. I’m thankful we’ve got time on our side.
