This week is World Breastfeeding Week! As a nursing mom, I am excited about this chance to share in an event with mothers around the world. Yes, I’m 18.5 weeks pregnant and still nursing Kate, who will be 13 months old this week. There are lots of benefits to nursing beyond the first year, which you can read about here. In spite of the amazing benefits of breastfeeding and how easy and cost effective it is, it’s still looked down upon in our culture to some extent, which is a shame. Breastfeeding is God’s design for nutrition for infants and beyond.

18.5 weeks already?! Your pregnancy is so going faster than my next pregnancy.
How has nursing while pregnant effected your pregnancy weight gain?
You are a stud ;) Jay is officially weaned as of last week. :( Not that he was getting much of anything anyway, poor kid. No wonder he preferred the bottle!
Sarah,
I am gaining exactly on pace with where I was for Kate. In fact, even though I was sick, I didn’t lose as much weight initially this time around. My midwives and pediatrician are both really supportive of my nursing while pregnant.
I was worried about her getting less when I found out we were expecting another baby, so I went out and bought some formula just in case, but she’s not needed it (though since we have it, we do add a little to her oatmeal if she eats hot cereal because she won’t eat it made with plain water.) She’s eating a good variety of solids and still definitely getting something from nursing.
it was interesting to notice the difference in attitude towards brestfeeding in my short trip to uruguay. never in the states would you see a toddler or infant attached to an uncovered breast here in the states… especially not in the church sanctuary.
