We stopped by Ikea in Atlanta when we drove home from Carolina earlier this month and I was pleasantly surprised to see that Ikea is now charging a nickel for plastic bags! Way to go, Ikea! They’ve also reduced the cost of their big blue bags to $.59 in an effort to get people to buy a reusable bag at the register instead of a plastic one. I was really excited. Well, a shopping trip to Ikea almost always makes me excited, but this was really great icing on the cake.

I’ll do ya one better… our last trip to IKEA we decided to skip the 5 cent bags and the blue bags, and just carried our stuff out as-is. :)
Wow, our Ikea (here in Queensland) doesn’t give out bags at all. You always have to buy them or bring your own. And they are either paper bags or the reusable blue ones.:-D We’re cheap so we always just take the cart to the car.;-)
You challenged me on the plastic bag thing, so I recently bought 10 of the $0.99 Meijer reusable bags. If I go to the right store, they give me a $0.05 credit per bag used. Now, they actually pack my bags full like I’ve tried to get them to do for *years*! Woo-hoo!
Ikea is only a concept to me. I’ve heard about Ikea from a hundred happy people, but I’ve never been in one.
Next visit to my son in Seattle, I’ll have to make it a priority.
