I had a variety of errands to do this morning, which is always tiring with two children, and I was feeling very blah in general. So the thought of running into Publix for just a few things was not exciting me. But I did what I had to, and Publix came through. Not only did their superior race car carts delight my children, they played Ingrid Michaelson and Sufjan Stevens in the ten minutes I was there. I really needed to hear “Chicago,” it cheered me up immensely. “you came to take us / all things go, all things go / to recreate us / all things grow, all things grow…”

there must be a Muzak channel that likes that song. I’ve been in Lowe’s twice in the last year, and I heard it both times, and it made me smile both times.
Right after we moved to our new apt, I heard “Chicago” in the local Publix and it made me so happy! Yay for Sufjan! :)
Any grocery store that plays Ingrid deserves a medal.
I love our Publix so much: the race cars, the fresh produce, $1 DVDs, friendly staff, free coffee, great store brands, free cookies for the kids, and someone to help you cart your groceries to the car…sigh…the one thing they lack is Wal-Mart’s prices. My deal with myself is if I just need groceries and not paper towels or toiletries or such, then I can go to Publix.
I’m a publix fan, too. . . and with their loss leaders and BOGO sales, we do pretty good. *grin*
Kristen, hearing songs in unexpected places happens to me all the time. I’ve heard Cat Power in a McDonald’s, Travis in a couple of truck stops and Radiohead in a truck stop, places to me that don’t necessarily seem like they should be played there, but it is definitely a day brightener for sure.
