Metaphysical Tradition?

In Henri de Lubac’s eulogy of Hans Urs von Balthasar, he writes that Balthasar “is perhaps the most cultivated of his time. Classical antiquity, the great European literatures, the metaphysical tradition … ”

What is meant by the ‘metaphysical tradition’. I suspect that this refers to a specific corpus of work, but which in particular?

Food

Last weekend I made the cider-brined pork tenderloin and served Ann Barlow’s apple coffeecake with caramel frosting for dessert.  Tonight we are having risotto with squash and pancetta.  Just a few recipe ideas for those who might need one!

Pillow Talk

A few nights ago Mike and I were talking about how he exaggerates and teases much more than I do. He was even having trouble coming up with examples of me using hyperbole. That led him to exclaim, “I can’t wait ’til they come out with Google Brain!” “Google BRAIN? You have totally sold out to the man.” “No, it would be really great. You could tell me a grocery list: milk, eggs, bread, yogurt – starred. I’d remember. And all the things I read and hear and…”

Yeah. He’s got it BAD.

Fascinating Information on Crying

Carol tipped me off to Oprah’s show yesterday about crying. I’m a firm believer that babies cry for a reason (not just to exercise their lungs) so I’d be interested to hear any parents of newborns experiences trying this out. I missed the show, but here are the basics, via Carol. Apparently, listening closely to the first letter is key.

neh = hungry
owh = sleepy
heh = discomfort
eair = lower gas
eh = burp

Update on our Neighbor

He passed away this weekend. His name is Edward. Please pray for his sweet wife, Margie, and their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Making a List

If you are itching to buy us something and don’t know what here are our Christmas wish lists (and Lexi’s birthday, too.)

Kate // Lexi // Family

The girls would also love classic children’s books they don’t own. You can see their library here and some book ideas here.

Or, just buy something from the World Vision Gift Catalog — we may not have a rug in our whole house, but lots of people don’t have houses or food.

Vaccinations

We vaccinate our children on a delayed (and somewhat selective) schedule. We do this because we think it is the right thing to do, for our children and for society at large. Continue reading

Curious Minds

So in previous blogging manifestations I always had one of those counters and I would look regularly at who was reading here: how many, when, etc.  Eventually I got over the whole counter thing and we never put one up when we switched to WordPress (and may have not had one for a while before then, I can’t remember.)  Overall, comments have remained steady the whole time we’ve blogged (almost six years for me!) so when I logged into our server and realized that they track stats for us and clicked, I expected to see similar numbers as before.  They were way way higher than I expected.  Who are all you people reading and lurking?

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Happy Birthday!  We love and miss you and wish we could have spent the day with you.

These are pretty amazing CDs. You ought to own them. Go listen and convince yourself.

Maybe I am a Winner, After All

I am not a winner. I never win anything. I used to blame it on being reformed. I’d say things like “Presbyterians never win anything.” Then I met this family here in Birmingham that won a $100,000 contest they didn’t even intentionally enter while they were members of a PCA church. So I can’t say that anymore.

I started doing Blingo in June. I don’t do 10 searches every day for maximum entries, but I do use it. Today, when I least expected it, I typed “pumpkin chocolate chip” into the Firefox search bar with Blingo as my search engine and I won a $10 iTunes giftcard (which means J.T. did, too, as my referrer!) It’s not an iPod (we could use a new one…) but it’s something. Maybe I’m a winner after all.

All Saints Day

In honor of All Saints Day, Kate’s favorite hymn to sing.

I sing a song of the saints of God,
patient and brave and true,
who toiled and fought and lived and died
for the Lord they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,
and one was a shepherdess on the green;
they were all of them saints of God, and I mean,
God helping, to be one too.

They loved their Lord so dear, so dear,
and his love made them strong;
and they followed the right for Jesus’ sake
the whole of their good lives long.
And one was a soldier, and one was a priest,
and one was slain by a fierce wild beast;
and there’s not any reason, no, not the least,
why I shouldn’t be one too.

They lived not only in ages past;
there are hundreds of thousands still.
The world is bright with the joyous saints
who love to do Jesus’ will.
You can meet them in school, or in lanes or at sea,
In church, or in trains or in shops or at tea,
for the saints of God are just folk like me,
and I mean to be one too.
