Excuses, Good Wishes and Shameless Self Promotion

Happy Halloween or Reformation Day or whatever-you-wish-to-celebrate this 31st day of October. We’re taking our kids trick-or-treating on the street tonight but we did go to a Reformation Day party over the weekend so I think we’re covered. I wish I had known about this before naptime because I totally would have wrapped Lexi in some tin foil for a burrito.

We’ve been busy. Someday I’ll blog about our day without cable service and how Charter annoys me. Here’s a picture to show what has really kept me from blogging: my sweet and active girls and my newly painted foyer.

The Stormin’ Mormons

Somehow I found myself on Ken Jennings’ blog. One of those random web-surfing experiences. Some of his posts were funny enough for me to read aloud to Mike. In the midst of our giggling, we decided Ken Jennings is one of the poster children for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Then Mike declared, “Ken Jennings and MITT ROMNEY! They should run together. The Republican ticket would be the stormin’ Mormons!”

The story is true but I really wrote this post to prove that memorizing the correct capitalization and punctuation for the Mormon church for a class in college really was worthwhile. If only I could learn my cell phone number.

Toad Sucking Dog

This story from All Things Considered amused me this afternoon.

Do you like Green Eggs and Ham?

Everytime I read or hear a story about Sen. Sam Brownback, I like him more.  I don’t have a lot of faith in politicians, but I’d like to see him nominated for the presidency.  Is there any better Republican for 2008?

Hopefully I will write a review of Simply Christian and something about vaccinations this week.  I am on a good blogging streak…

The Christian’s Hope Can Never Fail

We travel through a barren land,
With dangers thick on every hand;
But Jesus guides us through the vale;
O, The Christian’s hope can never fail. Continue reading

An Occasional Update from WFD

Winged Feet Design (my little work-at-home venture) just announced a pretty significant and exciting change: all of our full-service announcements will now be printed by an outstanding printing house in either 5×7 or 5×5 square instead of the old 4×6. More information on the orders page of the website. I’m really glad I could institute this change before the holiday season. The quality difference from our previous printing places (local big box or drug stores) is very pronounced and I’m glad to be able to offer the very best to all of my customers. We have and will continue to offer a design-only option for customers who’d prefer to print themselves for the best deal and we will continue to design those in 4×6 or any other size you’d like. To celebrate this change, I’m offering 15% off holiday announcements ordered by November 5th. Just send me your pictures, text and ideas by the end of the day November 5th and I’ll apply the discount.

Potpourri

I know that Brad is going to be disappointed, but I just can’t get into Galileo’s Daughter. Maybe if I had been able to work out Astronomy as my lab science at Carolina… I’ve read 75 pages and it’s just not gripping me.

The Myth of Prodigy and Why it Matters — a good read for all parents.

I took a luxurious bubble bath in the clawfoot tub at 6:15 pm while Mike took the kids out of the house. I am a very blessed wife.

Just in case you were wondering, this is an ad-free blog

at least, until someone makes me an offer I can’t refuse.

60 years and counting

When I step out our front door the first thing I see directly across the street is a classic post-war brick ranch. The first occupants still reside there, 60 years after they moved in as newlyweds. They raised their children in that house and watched their grandchildren play under the same big trees in the front yard. They’re dying now. We’re all dying, but they are on the fast track. He has advanced Alzheimer’s Disease and she cares for him, though she is losing her sight and hearing. I watch from my porch as their children and grandchildren visit them week after week and I wonder where we’ll be in sixty years. Probably not in this green bungalow.

No, thank you

One of the many things in society that never ceases to puzzle me is spam. The technological variety, though the stuff in the can puzzles me as well. My spam volume has increased dramatically in the past few months. I used to glance over my spam folders before I deleted and saved misguided messages, plucking them out of the depths and back into my inbox. Now, forget it. And our blogs have started to get spam. First the girls’ blogspots did, so I had to activate comment verification which is annoying, I know. Now this blog gets spam. Akismet through WordPress does a good job of finding it, but every once in a while it incorrectly labels one of your comments. Sorry about that. In order to find the wheat in the chaff I have to glance through my list every few days. Today we had no less than 25 spam messages about one weight loss drug. Does someone out there think I’m fat? With the billions of dollars in lost productivity yearly (I read this number somewhere…) you’d think someone would figure out how to end spam. It’s a quality of life issue, I think it would be a great campaign platform for some party.

Public Service Announcement

Oxyclean is a wonderful product line.  The new spray oxyclean is more of the same.  But follow the instructions.  Do not let it sit on items for days before you wash them.  Or you will ruin a brand new shirt (it bleaches and EATS HOLES.)  Yes, I know this from experience.
