Carol tipped me off to Oprah’s show yesterday about crying. I’m a firm believer that babies cry for a reason (not just to exercise their lungs) so I’d be interested to hear any parents of newborns experiences trying this out. I missed the show, but here are the basics, via Carol. Apparently, listening closely to the first letter is key.
neh = hungry
owh = sleepy
heh = discomfort
eair = lower gas
eh = burp
I saw the show;it was absolutely fascinating. Then, last night at church a friend was there with her 6wk old. The baby was fussy and the mom kept trying to get her to eat more, but I distinctly heard the “owh” sound and let her know the baby was sleepy. Sure enough, she gave her a paci, snuggled her, and she was instantly asleep! I wish I knew about this earlier.. would have saved a lot of stress and heartache.
Wow, Terri. You did an awesome job! Did you tell her how you knew? It would be a different world if mothers taught their daughters how to listen to their babies. God knew what He was doing! (Naturally!)
Thanks for linking to me, Kristen. :-)
That is interesting. I’ll give it a try with Isaac and see how it goes.
I wonder if that’s why my kids always make the “eair” sound? We have really refluxy and gassy kids.
That show was great! I have always felt I did understand what my babies needed when they needed it and the show just confirmed my experiences. I can’t wait to have another newborn to listen for the actual sounds!
