This is not that surprising considering most of the shipments of aid food to Africa that come from the US just sit unused because of fears of GM (genetic modification). This fear of GMO is spread by the EU which still has some control over their former colonies. But it is ridiculous and rather obnoxious and appalling.
It’s a good example of both the US and Sudan placing state interests over and against the interest of the needy. The US will provide only in-kind aid (wheat, sorghum, etc) to increase the price of U.S. crops (a subsidy to the US agricultural industry). This floods the Sudanese markets, driving down prices of local crops, and discouraging the development of local producers and the local economy. Aid, in finances, would allow for the purchases of local crops to feed the hungry. And Khartoum, as usual, wantonly disregards human life.
I don’t know if we only give food aid because it helps our farmers. It could be that we’ve been burned a number of times giving cash to the U.N. and/or foreign tyrants.
Not sure, but could be?
